Leslie & Charlie Hornfeck saw the need for a cool little bar at the docks when they first invested in a Hatteras Landing condominium in 2009. You see Leslie began her own rental property management company back then and was looking for an easy investment rental down this end of the Outer Banks beaches. This is a special area for the two as they got married on the Hatteras beach and at a house right across the way. They began using their little condo for quick overnight getaways when they could to escape the hustle and bustle of the beaches and their rental company business up north and provide Leslie & Charlie a brief respite from it all. But they looked around and realized there was no fun place they could go and get out and mingle, meet people, enjoy a cold beer, or grab a quick bite - nothing!
Charlie, a former musician, builder of things, and avid home Chef, was all in when Leslie suggested they lease an available space in the Hatteras landing marina shops. He used his uber-creative talents to reimagine the space, rebuild and move walls, layer and decorate with every bit of island memorabilia he's saved over the years and got to work on a menu that would feature great smoked pork and other island flavors that he loved so much. Keep in mind this was a first time venture for anything like this by Charlie. He simply was determined to do it and then he did. They opened the doors on The Wreck Tiki Bar in 2011 and have never looked back.
This place can be harsh - persistent and crazy weather and storms have in the past wiped a lot of things out and certainly put a halt to business many times over the past 8 years. But nonetheless, The Wreck has become a cherished favorite for visitors who come back year after year to enjoy the uniquely casual, friendly atmosphere that is fostered by Charlie's gregarious personality and Leslie's friendly sensibility. Together they have brought a little piece of Island living to Hatteras and all the folks that are visiting, vacationing, or just passing through on their way to Ocracoke and points beyond.
